What Are The Best Houseplants For An Apartment?
As we millenials/gen-zers start to move out of our parent’s homes, we want to express ourselves in our homes.
Even if we haven’t moved out, we still want to decorate our room to our liking. It is truly our safe space and lets us feel at peace when everything else in our lives feels out of control.
Plants are one of these beings that we really use to express ourselves and feel at peace. Whether it’s a simple succulent or something as complicated as a bonsai, it’s our way of expressing ourselves.
But, you also don’t want these decorative plants and beings to die and really mess up the vibe in your room. You want the plants to be vibrant and reflect a beautiful life. Even if you can’t take care of yourself, you want to be able to express your love to these innocent beings. We all want to look at beautiful plants right?
To make this step easier, we have picked these plants because they are:
Easy to maintain
Small
Pretty to look at
As noted previously, here are our top houseplants for an apartment.
Snakeplant
A fan favorite and just like its name, it can grow long and pretty. Snakeplants are easy to maintain and are nice to look at. Watering them is no problem at all since you only need to water them once every couple weeks. A good range is to gauge the plant after 2 weeks. And remember to not actually use a pitcher of water to water them. Use a spray bottle and give the leaves an ample amount of water.
Snakeplants also like medium light, about 10 feet away from direct sunlight. It doesn’t have to be EXACTLY that, but just don’t leave this plant in direct sunlight. If you don’t live in sunny South Florida or Texas, you can try to find the darker leafed snakeplants. Darker leafed snakeplants are much better suited for darker environments and will definitely not stress you as much as the lighter leafed snakeplants.
Zebraplant
Zebraplants can grow as tall as 1-2 feet indoors and about 4-6 feet outdoors. Zebraplants also need to be kept out of direct sunlight. Anything that is not direct sunlight and not just outright darkness will be fine. These plants are used to growing in the shadow of larger plants, so just keep that in mind and imagine that when growing these pretty babies.
The best way to gauge the watering schedule of a zebraplant is the moistness of the soil. If you overwater the leaves they can go dry, but if you don’t water it at all and let the soil go dry, then the plant will die. This is a personal preference and you should gauge the plant regularly once every couple days to about once a week.
Succulents
Succulents are a big family of plants that also include plants like snakeplants, zebraplants, and aloe vera. Succulents are not limited to just these 3 plants and can encompass a big family of plants.
Succulents are notorious for being low maintenance, small, and versatile with sunlight. You can water succulents once every 2-4 weeks. Depending on the city you live in, you can water it at an even lower frequency.
Succulents are also small, not growing more than a feet or two. They will not overcrowd the apartment and make your apartment feel like a jungle. The last thing you want in your small living space is to feel like your plants are just overtaking your room/home. Succulents will never make you feel like that and just give you a nice breath of fresh air and aesthetic.
Finally, succulents are extremely versatile with sunlight. Although you can’t put most of them in direct sunlight, most of them can survive in medium sunlight. Remember that most succulents are used to living in shadows. The sunlight won’t be that far from the plant, but it’s never in the direct sunlight.
Air Plants
Also some of the easiest plants to care for, air plants are low maintenance and great for an apartment. They do not require soil, but only require water, nutrients, and light. Air plants are used to living on the nutrients of other larger trees as they kind of use those nutrients to their benefits as well.
This doesn’t mean that air plants don’t need any care. You still must make sure that there is plenty of humidity. If there is no humidity, then you must make sure that there is plenty of water in its environment. Similar to succulents, air plants also require sunlight. But, this can’t be direct sunlight. Make sure to keep them out of direct sunlight, but still about 3-4 feet within the closest source of sunlight.
