How Often Should I Water My Succulents?

Wait, aren’t I supposed to water my plants everyday?

Am I supposed to water them once a month?

I don’t have to water my cactus right?

Succulents are tanks! I don’t need to water them more than once every couple months!

These are all common questions and beliefs that first-time plant owners have and share. Because these thoughts are so common, plant ownership is seen as hard and sometimes just outright thrown out the window.

But plant ownership doesn’t have to be hard and here are some quick rules to plant watering.

Water Your Succulents When The Soil Is Dry

Whoa, whoa, whoa!
Dry?

Yes, you read that right.

Water the succulents when the soil is dry. Succulents are basically desert plants and do not require that much water to thrive. Once the soil starts to go dry, you should water the succulents. Don’t water your plants everyday, because then they can drown and eventually die.

Succulents are weird in that way and it’s important to regularly monitor the soil and see if it’s dry. Obviously you don’t have to be all crazy and monitor it everyday, but just regular once a week or every couple days can go a long way.

From this step, you’ll notice that most succulents only really need watering about once every two to eight weeks. The most common succulents will really require watering once every two to three weeks.
Remember that plants are not all the same and it’s important for you to know your plants as well as you know your animals and people.

Water Sporadically With Large Amounts

Give your succulents deep drinks of water!

Get creative with it. Use a spray bottle and spray the leaves, spray the soil, and give them enough water to thrive.

Like I said, succulents are desert plants and you have to imagine it as such. In the desert, these plants will get deep long drinks after long periods of dryness. But obviously, you don’t have to expose your plants to such harsh environments, but keep it in mind. Instead of regularly watering your plants and spoiling them, you have to keep in mind that these plants are still used to that desert feel.

Regular check up on your plants, monitor the soil and the leaves, water accordingly. These are the simple steps to follow so that your plants don’t die in a month.
